2011 U.S. Amateur Starts Monday at Erin Hills

The 111th U.S. Amateur Championship teed off Monday, August 22nd, at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis. At 7,760 yards, the par-72 Erin Hills surpasses Chambers Bay, last year's Amateur host, as the longest course in USGA history.

The front nine at Erin Hills extends 3,821 yards, while the back nine stretches a whopping 3,939 yards. Based on the course setup for the championship, the course rating for Erin Hills is 77.4 and the Slope is 144. The companion course, par-70 Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, is considerably shorter as it will be set up at 6,622 yards. Blue Mound G&CC will be set for a course rating of 72.0 and Slope of 131.

Chambers Bay had overtaken the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif., which measured 7,643 yards for the 2008 U.S. Open, and 2006 U.S. Amateur host Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., which measured 7,473 yards.

Erin Hills was co-designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Golf Digest writer Ron Whitten. That design team also oversaw a major renovation to the layout in 2010. Blue Mound Golf & Country Club was designed by legendary architect Seth Raynor. There is no admission fee for this championship.

On each side of the fairways, a 5- to 7-foot-wide swath of intermediate rough will be set to 1.5-1.75 inches. Approaching the putting greens, the intermediate rough will gradually narrow down to 15 to 30 inches. An 18- to 20-foot band of first cut of primary rough will be set to 4 inches. A second cut of primary rough will be set to 6 to 8 inches.

Fairways will be cut to 0.500 inch, while collars around greens will measure 0.250 inch and putting green approaches 0.350-0.400 inch. The greens will be mowed to measure 12.5 to 13.5 feet on the Stimpmeter for the duration of the championship.

Eighteen holes of stroke play are scheduled for August 22 and 23, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers. Six rounds of match play begin on August 24 and the championship concludes with a 36-hole final match on August 28.

Among the benefits enjoyed by the U.S. Amateur winner are:

A gold medal and custody of the Havemeyer Trophy for the ensuing year
An exemption from local and sectional qualifying for the next U.S. Open
An exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs
An exemption from qualifying for the next British Open Championship
A likely invitation to the next Masters Tournament

The U.S. Amateur is the oldest golf championship in America, one day older than the U.S. Open. Except for an eight-year period, 1965-1972, when it was stroke play, the Amateur has been a match-play championship.

The U.S. Amateur is the most coveted of all amateur titles. Many of golf's greatest names, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Jerry Pate, Mark O'Meara, Hal Sutton, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, are etched on the Havemeyer Trophy.

But it was legendary amateur Robert T. Jones Jr. who first attracted national media coverage and sparked spectator attendance in the U.S. Amateur. Jones captured the championship five times (1924, '25, '27, '28 and '30). His 1930 victory was a seminal moment in golf history when, at Merion Cricket Club in Ardmore, Pa., Jones completed the Grand Slam, winning the four major American and British championships in one year.

Sixty-six years later, in 1996, Tiger Woods attracted similar interest and enthusiasm at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., when he won a record third straight U.S. Amateur, having registered 18 consecutive match-play victories. In 1994, Woods, at 18, had first entered the record book as the youngest ever to win the Amateur Championship, following his three consecutive Junior Amateur titles (1991-93). That record has since been broken twice, first by 17-year-old Danny Lee in 2008 at Pinehurst No. 2 in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., and then in 2009, when 17-year-old Byeong-Hun An won at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., with a 7-and-5 victory over Ben Martin, of Greenwood, S.C.

This will be the 12th USGA championship conducted in the state of Wisconsin, and the first U.S. Amateur.

The U.S. Amateur will be covered by the Golf Channel and NBC, with the air times as follows:

August 24: 3-5 p.m., Golf Channel
August 25: 1-3 p.m., Golf Channel
August 26: 1-3 p.m., Golf Channel
