Bad Weather Continues to Plague Zurich Classic

For the third day in a row Mother Nature played havoc with the Zurich Classic. The $6.9 million PGA Tour event began Thursday at TPC Avondale near New Orleans.

On Saturday, play was suspended by heavy rains at 1:15 EDT. Jason Day, the overnight leader at 12-under at 12-under 132, continued to remain atop the leaderboard. The 27-year-old Aussie, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 6 in the world, hadn't teed off in his third round after opening with a 67 and 65.

Remaining one stroke back are Americans Hudson Swafford, Daniel Berger and Chris Stroud. Nine other players are at 10-under.

The PGA Tour tries to ensure getting in 72 holes in its tournaments. But because the WGC-Cadillac Match Play event starts next Wednesday in San Francisco, continued bad weather may force officials to reduce the Zurich Classic to 54 holes, which would involve a Monday finish.

But rain is forecast for both Sunday and Monday in the New Orleans area.

Seven players in New Orleans are scheduled to play in the Match Play. The group includes defending champion Day, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Billy Horschel, Keegan Bradley, Bernd Weisberger and Marc Leishman.

Five other Match Play qualifiers missed the cut at the Zurich Classic. That group includes Rickie Fowler, Jamie Donaldson, Marc Warren, Harris English and John Senden.
