Bae Takes Frys.com Open

Though he tripped a bit on the back nine, Sang Moon Bae wasn't really threatened Sunday in the Frys.com Open.

The 28-year-old South Korean closed with a 1-over 73 at Silverado Country Club's North Course in Napa, Calif., to win the $6 million Frys.com Open, the opening event on the PGA Tour's 2014-15 season.

Bae, who began the final round four strokes ahead of the field, had two birdies on the front nine, making the turn in 1-under 35.

Despite three bogeys and just one birdie on the home half for a 38, he finished at 15-under 273, two strokes ahead of Australia's Steven Bowditch, who matched Sunday's low round of 67.

Bae, whose maiden victory came in last year's Byron Nelson Championship, earned $1.08 million with his second career title.

Bae noted that the golf course played tough Sunday. "The course wasn't easy. The greens were so fast," he said. "I know how well I did this week. I hit the ball really solid and (I'm) swinging really good, so I'm very happy and still excited."

He also admitted to doing some scoreboard-watching after forging a big lead on the front nine, and it wasn't productive. "I didn't want to look at the scoreboard, but I did. I looked a lot," he said. "That's why I made a lot of bogeys on the back nine."

Tied for third at 12-under 276 were Americans Bryce Molder (68) and Hunter Mahan (70), Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (70), South African Retief Goosen (70) and Scotland's Martin Laird (71).

Finishing another stroke back in eighth were Americans Hunter Swafford (67), Jon Curran (70) and Brooks Koepka (72), and Aussie Robert Allenby (70).

Defending champion Jimmy Walker, a member on the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup team that lost to the Europeans in Scotland last month, closed with a 73 and 74 over the weekend to end up in 63rd at even-par 288.
