Bae Up One in Sony Open

South Korea's Sang-Moon Bae fired a 7-under 63 to take the opening-round lead in the Sony Open. The second leg of the PGA Tour's Hawaiian swing began Thursday at Waialea Country Club in Honolulu.

Bae, who got his maiden victory last May in the Byron Nelson Championship, carded five birdies on the front nine and two more on the back for a one-stroke edge over Chris Kirk, two over Brian Stuard, and three over, among others, two-time major champions Retief Goosen and John Daly.

Perhaps the biggest news from Hawaii Thursday was that 2013 Masters' champion Adam Scott had professional surfer Benji Weatherley as his caddie. Scott's usual looper, the famed Steve Williams, is backing off his work schedule this year after turning 50 to focus on car-racing in his native New Zealand.

"He's old," a droll Scott said of Tiger Woods' former caddie. "One week in a row is enough. He's earned it. I'll let him drive one week, as long as he comes back."

Weatherley compared his job with Scott's, in a watery sort of way, opining he might be able to help the Aussie this week. "Golf is the same as surfing - it's just you and you can't blame anyone else. It's you against the elements. I'm going to be like his life coach and try to give him confidence. He's just so good."

Zach Johnson, who fired a closing 7-under 66 to win the tour's "traditional" season opener last week in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, had a 68 in Oahu.
