Cinks Rally to Win Father/Son Challenge

Stewart Cink and his son Connor fired a 9-under 27 on the back nine at the Grande Lakes course in Orlando to roll to victory in the PNC Father/Son Challenge.

After the two bogeyed the first hole, the Cinks went on to make the turn in the scramble event in 2-under 34. On the home half, however, they carded a 9-under 27 - including eagles on the par-5 14th and 18th holes - to close with their second straight 61 and a 22-under 122 total in the scramble event.

Connor, a 10 handicap who attends Clemson and plays golf only about once a month, was particularly important to the Cinks as he made several clutch putts, including the final eagle putt from 22 feet on the 18th hole. Combined, the Cinks needed only nine putts on their torrid home half.

"We just hit our stride out there," said Stewart Cink, the 2009 British Open champion. "That back nine was just a blur."

Finishing three strokes behind the Cinks were Vijay Singh and his son Qass (63) and the Elkingtons - Steve and Sam, who also had a 63. Defending champions Davis Love III and his son Dru (63) were at 127.

Steve Elkington tipped his cap to the winners. "Connor and Stewart were too strong today. Who would have picked the Cinks to win the tournament starting the week? And here they did it. They did it easy."

Jack Nicklaus and Jack Jr. shot a 65 to tie for fifth with Curtis Strange and his son Thomas (63) at 128.

With the victory the Cinks earned $200,000, while the Singhs and Elkingtons took home $68,625 per team.
