Club at Carlton Woods to Host 2-14 U.S. Junior Amateur

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced that The Club at Carlton Woods, in The Woodlands, Texas, will host the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. This will be the third USGA championship held at The Club at Carlton Woods. The dates of the championship are July 21-26.

"The USGA is excited to bring the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship to The Club at Carlton Woods, returning this championship to the state of Texas for the first time since 2001," said USGA Vice President and Championship Committee Chairman Thomas J. O'Toole Jr.

"The Jack Nicklaus Course will be a tough examination for the players and will help determine the best junior golfer in the United States. In addition, the Houston area is a vibrant golf community that will add to a great life experience for the players."

The Club at Carlton Woods' Jack Nicklaus Course opened in June 2001. The course, located approximately 30 miles north of Houston, features deep-faced fairway and greenside bunkering, water hazards and contoured greens. The Nicklaus Course was designated by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2003 and has qualified for recertification every year since.

The USGA Women's State Team Championship was played at the venue in 2007, with Arizona defeating Tennessee by eight strokes in the 54-hole championship. Thuhashini Selvaratnam led Arizona with rounds of 68 and 71 over the final 36 holes. Carlton Woods' Fazio Course hosted the 2007 USGA Men's State Team Championship, with host state Texas defeating Georgia by a stroke.

"Carlton Woods' ownership, members and staff are honored to have been selected as the host site for the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur," said Bill Langley, the club's vice president and managing director. "Since its establishment, Carlton Woods has been focused on hosting amateur events and being selected by the USGA for this prestigious championship brings great pride and anticipation to both the club and The Woodlands community. In addition to providing a great test of golf for some for the best juniors in the game today, we plan to display a large dose of Texas hospitality."

In addition to the two State Team Championships in 2007, The Club at Carlton Woods has hosted several USGA championship qualifying rounds, including the U.S. Open and U.S. Mid-Amateur. In 2004, the club was the site for the Texas State Amateur.

The U.S. Junior Amateur was first played in 1948. The championship is open to male amateurs who have not reached their 18th birthday by the conclusion of the championship and who have a USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 6.4. Tiger Woods and Johnny Miller are among U.S. Junior Amateur champions. In 2012, the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be played at The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H., from July 16-21. The 2013 championship will be played July 22-27 at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif.
