Day & Tringale Shoot 55 in Franklin Templeton Shootout

Jason Day and Cameron Tringale combined for a whopping 17-under 55 in the opening round of the Franklin Templeton Shootout. The $3.1 million two-man event with 12 teams began Thursday at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla.

Day and Tringale had just three pars in the first round while carding consecutive eagles on Nos. 13 and 14, with the rest of their scores birdies. They tied the tournament's scramble record previously accomplished by host Greg Norman and Steve Elkington in 2005.

The first day involves a scramble format followed by a modified alternate-shot Friday and Saturday concluding with a better ball. Eight of the top-30 players in the world are in this week's field.

Two shots back are defending champions Harris English and Matt Kuchar, who finished last year at 34-under 182, while trailing Day and Tringale by four are the teams of Graeme McDowell and Gary Woodland; Keegan Bradley and Camilo Villegas; and Ryan Palmer and Jimmy Walker.

The duos of Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker, Sean O'Hair and Kenny Perry, Retief Goosen and Mike Weir, and Justin Leonard and Rory Sabbatini are at 12-under.

Tied for 10th at 11-under are the pairings of Billy Horschel and Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed and Brandt Snedeker and Charles Howell III and Scott Verplank.
