Durant & Montgomerie Share Lead in Mississippi


Joe Durant and Colin Montgomerie each carded 5-under 67s to take a share of the 18-hole lead at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. The $1.6 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event started Friday at the Fallen Oak course in Biloxi.

Durant, who turned 50 last April and is in his second year on the Champions Tour, posted seven birdies and two bogeys.

The 51-year-old Montgomerie had six birdies and a bogey. After joining the over-50 circuit Monty has twice, both majors in 2014 - the Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open.

Sharing third after 68s are Americans Gene Sauers, Kevin Sutherland, Woody Austin and Brad Faxon, and South African David Frost.

Billy Andrade, Tom Pernice Jr. and Loren Roberts opened with 69s. One stroke further down the leaderboard are Mark Calcavecchia, Michael Allen and Kirk Triplett.

Shooting 71s were Canadian Stephen Ames, Australian Peter Senior and Americans Mike Goodes, Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, Olin Browne, Lee Janzen and Jay Haas.

Defending champion Jeff Maggert started with a 73.
