Faxon & Sluman On Top of Legends of Golf

Brad Faxon and Jeff Sluman combined for a 10-under 62 to lead after 18 holes of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. The 54-hole Champions Tour event started Friday at the Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga.

The duo carded four birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 4-under 32, then reeled off six more for a 30on the home half. The two played in the event for the first time in 2012 and are trying a different strategy this go-round.

"Last year was our first year playing together, and I think we came off with the strategy of Jeff driving the ball first, and as you know he's a very good driver of the ball and he just puts it in play," Faxon said. "We did a good job today of getting both balls in play, and a lot of holes we had two putts for birdie."

"Both of us played well from tee to green. He made seven birdies in the middle of the round and I cleaned up . . . at the last," added Sluman. "Brad had it in close on 18, I'm sure had I missed the putt (his) was going in. But as Brad said, I think my biggest contribution was giving him a stress-free ability on all the tee shots and second shots because I was in play and on the green. That's really what you want to do."

One stroke back are Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman, while posting 64s were Craig Stadler/Kirk Triplett, Tom Watson/Andy North and Tom Kite/Gil Morgan.

Opening with 65s were the pairings of Mark Calcavecchia/Peter Senior, Bill Glasson/Steve Pate, Sandy Lyle/Ian Woosnam, Steve Elkington/Rocco Mediate and Larry Mize/Hal Sutton.

One of the pre-tournament favorite teams, Fred Couples and Jay Haas, shot a 66 to tie for 11th with nine other groups.
