Faxon Wins on Senior Circuit without Hitting a Shot in Final Round

Though it didn't go the full 54 holes, the win still counted for Champions Tour rookie Brad Faxon. The overnight leader ended up getting his first victory on the senior circuit after the final round of the Insperity Championship at The Woodlands near Houston was washed out by heavy rains.

The eight-time winner on the PGA Tour shot a 7-under 65 Saturday that gave him a one-shot lead over Tommy Armour III entering the final round. And that's the way it ended in the rain-shortened event. The 50-year-old Faxon finished the way he started Sunday at 10-under 134.

Eduardo Romero finished two strokes back, while Jay Haas, Olin Browne and Schwab Cup points' leader Tom Lehman (70) tied for fourth at 7-under. Defending champion Fred Couples was 4-under.

The victory, worth $255,000, came in only Faxon's sixth event on the over-50 tour. "I had passed all my goals this week, was hitting my irons a lot better and made a 4-footer on 18 on Saturday, which turned out to be the winning stroke," he said.

Faxon had never won a tournament without hitting a shot in the final round. "I can't say I was hoping for a rainout because of what a win means out here, but I wanted to play. I was playing really good."

Official Brian Claar said Champions Tour regulations do not allow for a Monday finish. "There was no place to push the water. It came down so fast and we had already had so much rain today."

Lehman maintained his lead in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points standing. There are two events remaining on the Champions Tour schedule.
