First Round of LPGA Event in Bahamas Reduced to 12 Holes

In one of the oddest occurrences in recent memory, the opening round of the inaugural Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was reduced to 12 holes as one-third of the Ocean Club course are still underwater.

Heavy storms on Tuesday dumped almost 15 inches of rain in the area and 50-mph winds damaged many of the temporary structures set up for the $1.3 tournament.

The first round of the 72-hole event was canceled, and officials hoped to get in 54 holes - starting Friday, but were unable to do so.

"We put our heads together and thought this was the best alternative to deal with a difficult situation," said Michael Whan, LPGA commissioner. "We think we have at least 12 holes that are playable and in this way we are putting on a golf tournament and playing enough holes for the money to count as being official. We think this is the best solution, and it still delivers a great event for our sponsors and fans."

The closing holes on the front and back nines were out of play Friday, so a composite course of Nos. 10, 6, 7, 4, 5, 11-14, 2, 3 and 8 was created. Because of the situation, there will not be a cut.

After 12 holes and with several players yet to complete their abbreviated rounds, American Heather Bowie stood atop the leaderboard after posting six birdies for a 6-under 39. Sharing second at 40 were Sweden's Anna Nordqvist and American Lisa McCloskey.
