First Round of OHL Classic at Mayakoba Suspended

Two bad-weather delays on Thursday resulted in a suspension of play in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. The $6 million PGA Tour event is taking place at El Camaleon Golf Club in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

In the morning, play was delayed for over an hour due to lightning in the area, and then it was halted for good by continued lightning and heavy rain just before 2:30 p.m. ET.

"The biggest thing was the lightning threat and the rain we received," the Tour's vice president of Rules and Competitions Slugger White told PGATour.com. "We absolutely lost the golf course. With this rain it just knocked us out."

The clubhouse leaders are Matt Jones, Will MacKenzie and Len Mattiace, who each shot 2-under 69s, while Brian Stuard is at 5-under through 15 holes. Sitting at 4-under are Eric Compton (through 17) and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros (15).

Harris English (17 holes), Jeff Maggert (15) and Jamie Lovemark (12) are at 3-under. Defending champion John Huh never teed off Thursday.

The first round will resume before the start of the second round at 7:45 a.m. Friday, when more bad weather is forecast. "We'll just grind through it again," added White.

Although the OHL Classic at Mayakoba is the sixth event in the PGA Tour's new 2013-14 season, its tournaments this year have been plagued by weather delays. According to the PGA Tour, 22 of 40 events were delayed for various reasons. Two of the first six events of the 2013-14 season have experienced some sort of suspension of play.
