Frost Runs Away with the Toshiba Classic


David Frost fired a 6-under 65 for a wire-to-wire win in the Toshiba Classic. The $1.75 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event began Friday at the par-71 Newport Beach Country Club in Southern California.

Frost a 53-year-old South African, posted rounds of 63, 66 and 65 to finish at 19-under 194, five strokes ahead of Fred Couples, who closed with a 69. The victory was worth $262,500.

The win was Frost's fourth on the over-50 circuit, and he became only the second player since Nick Price in 2011 to lead all three rounds in the Toshiba Classic's 19 years.

After four birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, Frost closed out the tournament in style, carding four birdies in his final four holes.

Couples, the 2010 champion who began the final round only a shot behind Frost after rounds of 64 and 66, posted four birdies and two bogeys Sunday.

Eight strokes behind Frost were Aussie Peter Senior (66) and Jay Haas (67), while in fifth at 203 was Tom Watson (66). Rocco Mediate (66) and Mexico's Esteban Toledo (68) shared sixth at 9-under 204.

Defending champion Loren Roberts posted rounds of 69, 70 and 72 to end up tied for 39th at 2-under 211.
