Funk Now On Top of Greater Hickory Classic


Fred Funk shot his second straight 6-under 66 to take the 36-hole lead in the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. The $1.6 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event started Friday at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

After carding four birdies and an eagle in the first round, the 56-year-old Maryland native posted six birdies Saturday. Funk has yet to make a bogey in the tournament en route to reaching 12-under 132, one stroke ahead of Larry Mize, who shot a 67.

Chip Beck and Duffy Waldorf both carded 67s to take share of third at 136 with defending champion Mark Wiebe, who had a 69. Tied for sixth a 137 are Gene Sauers (68), Peter Senior (69), David Frost (71) and first-round pacesetter Dan Forsman, who followed up his opening 65 with a 72.

Standing in 10th at 139 are Mark O'Meara (69), Bernhard Langer (69), John Cook (71) and Jay Don Blake (72).

Entering the tournament Langer led the season-long Charles Schwab Cup standings. Tom Lehman, second in the standings, had a 2-over 74 to fall into a tie for 24th at 142.
