Furyk Jumps to Top of Canadian Open

Second-round co-leader Jim Furyk separated himself from the field in the PGA Tour's $5.7 million Canadian Open following a 5-under 65 Saturday on the Blue Course at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Furyk, who won the tournament in 2006 and '07 among his 16 career titles, had a flawless outing with five birdies and the rest pars. The 44-year-old Pennsylvanian heads into Sunday at 15-under 195, three strokes clear of South Africa's Tim Clark, who shot the low third round of 64.

The 38-year-old Clark also had an excellent day in moving into contention. The 2010 Players champion posted four birdies and an eagle, with his first birdie coming on the opening hole and the eagle at the par-4 second when he holed out from the fairway.

"You dream of a start like that, and after that I continued to play some pretty solid golf," said Clark, who's been playing well since the John Deere Classic two weeks ago. "I was struggling a little bit with my ball-striking at the start of the year, then I found it a few months ago . . . and now finally the putts are starting to go."

Kyle Stanley posted a 68 to get to third place at 10-under 200, while fellow American Jamie Lovemark had a 67 for solo fourth at 9-under.

Sharing fifth at 8-under are Americans Joe Durant (67), Scott Brown (69) and Tim Petrovic (72), and Canada's Graham DeLaet (70). After opening with rounds of 64 and 66, the 47-year-old Petrovic shared the lead through the first two rounds.

DeLaet, a native of Saskatchewan, is seeking to become the first Canadian to win his national championship since Pat Fletcher 60 years ago.

Tied for ninth at 7-under are Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (69), Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (70), and Americans Michael Putnam (69) and Justin Hicks (70).

The top-ranked player in the field, No. 7 Matt Kuchar, shot a 70 to move into 13th at 6-under 204. Because of the threat of inclement weather in the final round, the PGA Tour will send the players off in threesomes from the first and 10th holes starting at 8 a.m. ET. The forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday.
