Goydos Birdies Last to Win Allianz Championship


Paul Goydos birdied the par-5 18th hole to win the Allianz Championship. The $1.7 million Champions Tour event took place on the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Fla.

Goydos, a 50-year-old from Long Beach, Calif., carded five birdies and two bogeys for a 69 to finish at 12-under 204, a stroke ahead of Gene Sauers, who closed with a 67.

Goydos began the day sharing the lead with Canada's Rod Spittle and fellow Americans Paul Goydos, Tom Pernice Jr. and Bart Bryant.

The victory, worth $255,000, was the second for Goydos on the over-50 circuit. His first came last September at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship.

Tied for third at 206 were Fred Funk (66), John Huston (66) and defending champion Michael Allen (67).

Argentina's Jose Coceres fired the low round of the day, a 9-under 63 to rise into a share of sixth at 207 with Tommy Armour III (66) and Jay Haas (69). The 51-year-old Coceres posted eight birdies, an eagle on the par-5 11th hole and a bogey.

Bryant closed with a 73 to drop into a tie with for ninth at 208 with Spittle, who also went 1-over Sunday.
