Luiten Ekes out One-Stroke Victory in Wales Open

In the final event before next week's Ryder Cup, The Netherlands' Joost Luiten won the Wales Open. The European Tour event took place at Celtic Manor Resort.

Luiten closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 14-under 270, a shot ahead of England's Tommy Fleetwood and Ireland's Shane Lowry, who carded a 67 and 70, respectively.

The win was Luiten's third on the European Tour, and provided consolation for him not being among the 12-man European Ryder Cup team that will go against the Americans at Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.

"I knew when the qualification ended I needed to play better so luckily I'm in good form now," Luiten told reporters. "I just wish the team all the best and hopefully they can win."

One of the European squad's members, Lee Westwood, is not going into the biennial competition off a good tournament. The 41-year-old Brit closed with a 76 and ended up tied for 66th at 2-over par.

One of the European squad's members, Lee Westwood, is not going into the biennial competition off a good tournament. The 41-year-old Brit closed with a 76 and ended up tied for 60th at 2-over par.

"I needed to play some competitive golf and I've done that," Westwood said. "I hit a few good shots this week, not so good today, but I probably had one eye on next week. I don't think the concentration and the focus was there."
