Mallon Named Solheim Cup Captain

Meg Mallon has been appointed captain of the 2013 U.S. Solheim Cup team. Mallon, 48, played in eight of the biennial competitions against Europe and served as an assistant captain in 2009.

The Americans hold an overall 8-4 lead in the matches, but lost to the Europeans last September in Ireland. The 2013 matches will be held at Colorado Golf Club on August 13-18.

"I've participated in the Solheim Cup on nine occasions and each has been a proud moment for me," said Mallon, who had a 13-9-7 mark and was on six victorious teams during her time on the American squad. "But to represent the United States as team captain definitely caps off my career."

In 2011 she captained the U.S. Junior Solheim Cup team to victory in Ireland at Knightsbrook in Meath. "It was exciting to be a part of the future in Ireland last year," Mallon said.

"I didn't know the players very well going in, but we really bonded well and it turned out to be such a rewarding week. I really think it will influence my style in 2013."

Mallon, who retired from competition in July 2010, enjoyed a stellar career on the LPGA Tour. The native of Natick, Mass., won 18 career LPGA titles, including four majors, and earned more than $9 million over 24 seasons.
