Martin's 62 Moves Him to First in Vegas


Ben Martin's 9-under 62 propelled the 27-year-old South Carolinian to the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of the Shriners Hospital for Children Open. The $6.2 million PGA Tour event began Thursday at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

On Saturday he carved out a two-stroke lead after starting with four birdies and a bogey on the front nine, and on the home half, reeling off six birdies - including five in a row on Nos. 13-17 -for a 6-under 30 and a three-round total of 17-under 196.

Martin finished 76th in last season's FedEx Cup standings.

Scotsman Russell Knox, who started the third round tied for the lead with Andrew Putnam, is in second place following a 66, while four behind Martin are Jimmy Walker - who matched Martin for the day's low round with a 62, and Andrew Svoboda (67).

Tied for fifth at 12-under 201 are Kevin Streelman (63), Brooks Koepka (64), Scott Piercy (67) and defending champion Webb Simpson (67).

Putnam had a 73 to drop into a tie for 24th at 8-under 205.
