McIlroy Receives another Honor

Rory McIlroy has been named the winner of the Golf Writers Trophy. The award is given out by the Association of Golf Writers, a group of golf scribes in Europe.

McIlroy has already been honored as the player of the year by the PGA of America, PGA Tour and European Tour. The top-ranked player in the world received the AGW's award - his second in three years - through a vote by its members.

Germany's Martin Kaymer, winner of the U.S. Open in June, was runner-up in the ballot.

"To win it for the first time in 2012 felt like a great achievement but to win again in 2014 is testimony to what has been a truly fabulous year for me," said the 25-year-old Northern Irishman, who also won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to the members of the Association of Golf Writers who have felt me worthy to receive this honor, I really do appreciate it," he added.

The Golf Writers Trophy was first awarded in 1951 and is given to a European who has made the most outstanding contribution to the sport during the year.
