McIlroy Supplants Donald at No. 1

After winning the PGA Championship for his second major title in two years, Rory McIlroy replaced Luke Donald as the No. 1-ranked player in the official World Golf Ranking.

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman has 507.35 points, while Donald, who spent a total of 55 weeks in the top spot and ended up tied for 32nd place in the PGA on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, has 498.65. Tiger Woods, who began the PGA Championship in the second slot, fell to No. 3 with 348.37 points after he ended up sharing 11th in the final major of the year.

It's not the first time McIlroy has been No. 1. He first got there after winning the Honda Classic in March and stayed there for 10 weeks before Donald regained the position.

Lee Westwood and reigning U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson round out the top five, while Adam Scott, Justin Rose (who jumped from 10th place off his tie-for-third in the PGA), 2012 Masters winner Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner and Steve Stricker rank No. 6-10. Matt Kuchar is No. 11, followed by Keegan Bradley.

With his rather poor finish in the PGA Donald will have to wait until next year's Masters for a chance for his first major title. "I've won twice this year but I look at this year as somewhat of a disappointment in terms of the majors," Donald said.

"You always gear your season up to peak at these events and I haven't quite figured that out yet," he added.

Carl Pettersson, who put up a good fight in South Carolina, moved up to 32nd with his T-3 finish last Sunday.
