Meth Wins U.S. APL Championship

Byron Meth of San Diego needed 37 holes to beat Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., and win the final U.S. Amateur Public Links title.

It was a back-and-forth affair on Saturday at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kans.

The 21-year-old Meth, who shared stroke-play medalist honors with the 18-year-old Ghim, got the 36-hole match to all-square after he bogeyed the final hole, which Ghim doubled.

On the first sudden-death hole - the 478-yard, par-4 first - Meth won the championship with a bogey, while Ghim doubled.

Meth's name will be the last one etched on the James D. Standish trophy as the APL - along with the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship being played this week at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash. - will be replaced in 2015 by new amateur four-ball championships for both men and women.
