Mickelson Takes Two-Stroke Lead at Quail Hollow


Phil Mickelson followed up his opening-round 68 with a 5-under 67 Friday to take a two-shot lead at the halfway point of the Wells Fargo Championship. The $6.7 million PGA Tour event is being held at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C.

After record five birdies and a bogey Thursday, "Lefty" posted six birdies and a bogey in the second round to reach 9-under 135, two shots ahead of Australia's Scott Gardiner, who also shot a 67, first-round co-leader Nick Watney (70) and George McNeill (68).

Another stroke back are 18-hole co-leader Rory McIlroy (71), Lee Westwood (68), Rod Pampling (69), Derek Ernst (71) and Jason Kokrak (70). Lucas Glover (71), David Lynn (68), and Robert Garrigus (72) share 10th at 139.

The other 18-hole co-leaders fell down the leaderboard. Ryan Moore had a 75, a 72, Daniel Summerhays a 73 and Nate Smith a 74.

The cut was set at 2-over 146. Defending champion Rickie Fowler made the weekend by two strokes after his second straight 72.
