New Public Course Underway in Hudson County, N.J.

In an area known for its posh - and expensive - private clubs, a new affordable nine-hole course is under construction in Hudson County, N.J. Slated to open in mid-2015 Hudson County Golf Course in Lincoln Park will extend 3,200 yards and be priced at $20 a round.

The project is being built on a 55-acre site at Routes 1&9 and Duncan Avenue. The county is providing the funding for the $20 million course, which involves bringing in about 1.2 million cubic yards of fill to a formerly flat piece of ground. With all the earth-moving, the new layout will feature elevation changes as high as 45 feet.

The course will feature three par-3s, three par-4s and three par-5s, and involve natural wetlands. Views will encompass the Word Trade Center, Empire State Building, Pulaski Skyway, Journal Square, Hackensack River and Carson-Nguyen Memorial Bridge. In addition to the course, the facility will contain a clubhouse, dining facility and outdoor patio.

"This is really golf," Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise told reporter Michaelangelo Conte of The Jersey Journal. "This is not a pitch and putt.

"This is the first public, affordable golf course in Hudson County and we are the only county in New Jersey that did not have a public course," DeGise added. "The only golf courses in the county now are in Bayonne and Jersey City and both cost about half a million dollars to join." The course expected to attract seniors, juniors and golfers who don't want to spend four-plus hours and high green fees playing a regulation-length, 18-hole track. County residents will be able to buy a card that allows discounted fees and tee-time priority.

One of its features will be an elongated "S-shaped" bridge used by golfers that crosses a waterway. A walking path will also be arrayed around the course's perimeter.
