Nicklaus Unveils Cabo's Quivira Golf Club

On a sunny early December day on the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Jack Nicklaus officially opened Quivira Golf Club.

Numerous dignitaries, resort executives, international media and property owners gathered for the ceremony on the 7,139-yard course, followed by a ceremonial tee-off on the 12th hole with Ernesto Coppel Kelly, owner and developer of Quivira and Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Spas; Marcos Alberto Covarrubias Villasenor, Governor of the state of Baja California Sur; and Nicklaus.

In a token of appreciation, Letty Coppel, co-owner of Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Spas, presented a silver whale to Nicklaus, who this week learned he will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Quivira course is marked by huge dunes, sheer granite cliffs and rolling desert foothills. Situated 10 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, it's the sixth Nicklaus-designed course in Los Cabos.

"This is one of the great pieces of property in the world," Nicklaus said. "We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes, and I believe we've created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks."

Quivira offers players more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos. All 18 holes feature panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, which swells with breaching whales in the winter.

Quivira Golf Club also features a thatched-roof clubhouse between the first tee and 18th green with a large rectangular bar, a casual steakhouse, and outdoor seating overlooking the sea. Beside the clubhouse is a double-ended driving range alongside the ocean, an elongated practice putting green and a short-game practice area.

Quivira Golf Club is accessible to guests of the four Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas in Los Cabos, and owners of properties in Copala, Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, and Novaispania Residences.
