Pernice Edges Garwood in Principal Charity Classic


Tom Pernice Jr. birdied the second playoff hole to edge Doug Garwood and win the Principal Charity Classic. The $1.75 million Champions Tour event took place at Wakonda Golf Club in Des Moines.

Pernice closed with a 3-under 69 to catch Garwood, the 36-hole leader, at 12-under 204.

Garwood - a 51-year-old making only his fourth start of the year and the ninth in two years on the senior circuit - shot a 71 after entering the final round with a one-stroke lead over Michael Allen.

After both made pars on the first extra hole - the par-4 18th, they returned to the same hole. Pernice became the winner after making a 10-foot birdie putt from just under 10 feet.

Pernice won for the third time on the Champions Tour, earning $262,500 Sunday.

Finishing a stroke out of the playoff were Bill Glasson (64), Jay Haas (67), Mark Calcavecchia (70) and Allen (71).

Joe Durant (70) ended up in seventh, while sharing eighth at 9-under were Bobby Clampett (68) and Tom Lehman 70).
