Pop Star Timberlake Sells Course in Tennessee for Big Loss

Though he certainly didn't go broke in the deal, pop-music star Justin Timberlake sold a golf course he poured millions into for a staggering loss.

The Memphis Business Journal reported that Timberlake recently sold his Mirimichi Golf Course in Millington, Tenn., for $500,000 to Memphis businessman Fred Edmaiston.

The former Big Creek Golf Course facility was acquired by Timberlake and his family in the fall of 2007 for $800,000. A few years later various projects totaling $16 million were completed. The work involved a new clubhouse, a cart-storage building and a new maintenance facility built to the highest of the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

The course also underwent significant upgrades involving upgrades to the bunkers, enhanced playability, additional length, and improved greens and overall aesthetics.

In addition, Timberlake built a $1.3 million Callaway Performance Center and a par-35, 2,500-yard nine called Little Mirimichi, an 18-hole putting GC, and a short-game practice area.

Upon acquiring the course, Edmaiston said he planned to "restructure the membership."

Timberlake renamed the facility Mirimichi in honor of his Native-American heritage. His investment in course improvements drew the attention of several national publications, including Golfweek, which ranked it as one of the "best courses you can play" in both 2013 and '14.

The courses use recycled rainwater for irrigation. Among other environmentally-sensitive attributes, Mirimichi is the first golf course in the United States to receive official Audubon Classic Sanctuary certification by Audubon International, and is just one of 10 golf courses worldwide to receive certification from the Golf Environment Organization for its sustainability standards.

The 33-year-old Timberlake, a dedicated golfer who plays to a 6 handicap, got his start in the boy band NSYNC. He later branched out on his own musical career and is also a fine actor. He married actress Jessica Biel in October 2012. Timberlake served as the tournament host of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open from 2008-12.
