Sauers Takes Over Top Spot at Insperity Championship

Gene Sauers fired a 6-under 66 to take over the 36-hole lead in the Insperity Championship. The $1.8 million Champions Tour event began Friday at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas.

Sauers, a 50-year-old who made his debut on the senior circuit in last August's Boeing Classic, carded four birdies and a bogey on the front nine and tacked on three more birdies on the home half to reach 8-under 136, two shots ahead of first-round leader Mike Goodes (69) and five in front of Loren Roberts, who also shot a 69.

Sauers' 66 is the lowest round of the tournament, which due to cold and blustery conditions has yielded few under-round scores, with only six players breaking even-par 144 through 36 holes. Defending champion Fred Funk's 54-hole total last year was 14-under 202.

Tied for fourth at 1-under 143 are Australia's Peter Senior (70) and Mexico's Esteban Toledo (71). At 144 and tied for sixth are England's Barry Lane (67), Mark Calcavecchia (69), Mark O'Meara (71), Steve Jones (72) and Brian Henninger (73).

Funk has posted rounds of 75 and 76 and sits at T-45 heading into Sunday's final round.
