Short Rallies to Victory in Quebec


Wes Short Jr. eagled the par-5 18th hole at Tempete Golf Club in Quebec City on Sunday to win the $1.6 million Quebec Championship.

Short, a 50-year-old rookie on the Champions Tour, carded six birdies and the eagle to finish with an 8-under 64 and a 54-hole total of 15-under 201, one stroke ahead of Scott Dunlap. Short's maiden title on the over-50 circuit was worth $240,000.

Dunlap, a 51-year-old who logged his first Champions Tour victory two weeks ago at the Boeing Classic, also closed with a 64. His round included four birdies and two eagles that came on the par-5 ninth and 18th holes.

Defending champion Esteban Toledo and fellow 36-hole co-leader Brad Faxon each shot 71s to drop into a share of third at 11-under 205.

One stroke further down the leaderboard were Americans Jim Carter and Kirk Triplett, who carded 68s.

David Frost (68), Jay Haas (70) and Loren Roberts (71) ended up tied for seventh at 207.

The top-finishing Canadian was Jim Rutledge, who finished with a 68 to tie for 10th at 8-under with Bill Glasson (68), Michael Allen (68), Mark Mouland (69), Jeff Sluman (69), Jay Delsing (69), P.H. Horgan III (70), Duffy Waldorf (71) and Scott Simpson (71).

Bernhard Langer, the runaway leader in the 2014 Charles Schwab Cup race, and Fred Couples, winner of last week's Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, didn't play in Quebec.
