Smith Secures First Champions Tour Title


Jerry Smith took advantage of his three-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Encompass Championship. The $1.9 million Champions Tour event took place at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.

Smith, a 51-year-old from Iowa who now resides in Arizona, closed with a 2-under 70 finish the 54-hole tournament at 16-under 200, three strokes ahead of South African David Frost (68) and four in front of Wes Short, Jr. (68).

Smith's victory - worth $285,000 - was secured when he holed our from a greenside bunker for an eagle on the par-5 16th.

Tied for fourth at 205 were Woody Austin and Bart Bryant, who each posted 70s, while sharing sixth at 206 were Duffy Waldorf, Fred Funk, Lee Janzen and Mike Goodes.

Fred Couples, playing for the first time since late March due to his troublesome back, closed with a 67 to tie for 10th at 207 with Kenny Perry and Tom Lehman, who each shot 68s.
