Snedeker Rolls to Three-Stroke Win in Canadian Open

Brandt Snedeker closed with a 2-under 70 to win the Canadian Open for his second title of the year. The $5.6 million PGA Tour event took place at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.

The 32-year-old from Nashville carded four birdies and a pair of bogeys to finish 72 holes in 16-under 272, three shots ahead of fellow Americans William McGirt (68), Dustin Johnson (70), Matt Kuchar (71) and Jason Bohn (71).

Snedeker was as surprised as anyone after he found himself in sudden contention in the championship midway through the third round. As he stood on the seventh tee Saturday, he looked at the leaderboard and didn't see the name of 36-hole leader Hunter Mahan.

Turned out Mahan withdrew before the start of the rain-delayed third round to head home to Texas to be with his wife, Kandi, who went into labor. She gave birth to the couple's first child, daughter Zoe Olivia Mahan, early Sunday morning.

After the birth, Mahan tweeted, "What a whirlwind of a day, but I'm happy to announce the birth of my daughter Zoe Olivia Mahan born at 3:26 a.m. Thanks for all the support! . . . Both Baby and Mom are doing great. Thanks to all to my sponsors who appreciate what's important in life and all my fans for being Awesome!"

Snedeker held a one-shot lead through 54 holes thanks a 9-under 63 Saturday. He was good enough in the final round to cruise to victory.

"Didn't have my best stuff, but rolled the ball real well today," Snedeker said at greenside. The win, worth $1.008 million and 500 FedEx Cup points, was the sixth of his career, augmenting his February win at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Sharing sixth at 12-under 276 were Americans Roberto Castro (70), John Merrick (71) and Mark Wilson (70). Another stroke back were Australia's Aaron Baddeley (68), Patrick Reed (71) and two-time Canadian Open champion Jim Furyk, who closed with a 70.

Defending champion Scott Piercy shot a 71 to end up tied for 52nd at 2-under 286.

The top-finishing Canadian was David Hearn, who closed with a 1-over 73 for a share of 44th at 284. Another stroke down the leaderboard was Ontarian Mike Weir, who carded rounds of 73 and 72 over the weekend.
