Stranges & Langers Share Lead PNC Father/Son Challenge

Curtis Strange and his son Tom posted a 10-under 62 to tie the Langers for the first-round lead in the PNC Father/Son Challenge. The 36-hole scramble event began Saturday at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.

The Stranges were aided by a par save from a greenside water hazard on the par-3 17th hole, sharing the lead with Bernhard Langer and his 14-year-old son Jason.

"Heck, (the water) was 12 inches deep there," Curtis told reporters of his son's effort on the 17th. "Tom hit a great shot out of there. It wasn't easy. Then I made a putt. You'll make a lot of birdies in this format, but sooner or later you'll have to make a par."

Langer's young teenage son Jason was a last-minute replacement for his daughter, Christina, who pulled out before play began with back problems. "He did great," Bernhard said. "I'm very proud of him."

One stroke back heading into Sunday's final round are Team Miller (father Johnny and his son Andy), Team Singh (Vijay and Qass), Team Irwin (Hale and Steve) and defending champions the Cinks (Stewart and Connor).

Tied for seventh are the Janzens, Lyles, O'Mearas, Stocktons and Loves.
