Three Share Lead in Allianz Championship

Paul Goydos, Tom Pernice Jr. and Bart Bryant each opened with 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the Allianz Championship. The $1.7 million Champions Tour event started Friday at the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Fla.

The 50-year-old Goydos, who still plays on the PGA Tour but won as a rookie last September on the Champions Tour, posted seven birdies and a bogey for his 66.

Starting on the 10th tee, four-time winner Pernice carded eight birdies through 17 holes and would have taken the overnight lead but the 55-year-old Missourian double-bogeyed his last hole, the par-4 ninth.

The 52-year-old Bryant, the younger brother of Brad and a one-time winner on the over-50 circuit, recorded four birdies and an eagle on the 18th (his ninth hole of the day).

Just one stroke back of the leaders are Americans Tom Byrum and Fred Funk, along with reigning Charles Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer of Germany.

Trailing by two are Peter Jacobsen, Grant Waite, Brad Bryant, Mark Brooks, Loren Roberts and Roger Chapman.

Defending champion Michael Allen opened with a 70.

The winner of the only event on the Champions Tour so far in 2015, Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, isn't entered this week.
