Triplett Secures Fourth Title on Champions Tour


Kirk Triplett closed with a 3-under 69 to win the SAS Championship. The $2.1 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event began Friday at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C.

Triplett, who soared to the top of the leaderboard after firing a 9-under 63 on Saturday, posted six birdies and three bogeys to finish at 14-under 202, three strokes ahead of Tom Lehman, who closed with a 70.

The victory, worth $315,000, was the fourth on the Champions Tour for the 52-year-old Triplett, a native of Moses Lake, Wash., who now makes his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Kenny Perry shot a 5-under 67 to move into a tie for third at 10-under 206 with Germany's Bernhard Langer (68), while another stroke back were Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty (67), Kevin Sutherland (70) and Paul Goydos (72).

Tied for eighth at 208 were South African David Frost (70) and Marco Dawson (71), while sharing 10th another two strokes back were Corey Pavin (68), Bart Bryant (68), Joey Sindelar (69), Gary Hallberg (69), Jeff Hart (69), Steve Lowery (70), Michael Allen (70), Fred Funk (74) and Guy Boros (74).

Defending champion Russ Cochran stumbled to a closing 76 to drop into a tie for 50th at even-par 216.
