UW Takes Big Lead at Pac-12 Preview

No. 6 Washington completed one of the most impressive days in school history, taking a sizeable lead at the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Course on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Dawgs finished 36 holes at 9-under 575 to take an eight-shot lead over one of the year's best fields in women's college golf.

"It was a good day all around," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "This is the best field we will see until conference so it was great to see us play so well compared to the competition. The team just stayed in the moment all day and even when the wind picked up didn't let anything get to us."

The Huskies got off to a hot start with a round of 10-under 282 in the morning. Washington built a six-shot lead on No. 7 UCLA and increased that in the afternoon. Winds picked up for some of the second round, causing higher scores, but the UW shot 1-over 293 to take an eight-shot lead over the Bruins. No other team is closer than 19 strokes.

"The 10-under in the morning was really impressive," said Mulflur of her team's performance, the lowest score to par of any round in the history of Washington women's golf. "You'll take that any time."

No. 3 Stanford is third at 10-over, followed by No. 13 Arizona at 11-over, Washington State at 12-over and No. 2 USC at 13-over.

After such a dominant day, it is no surprise that several Huskies are near the individual lead. Four Huskies are inside the top-10 with one round left, led by SooBin Kim who is at 6-under for the championship. Kim fired a 5-under 68 in the morning, followed by a 1-under 72 in the afternoon and trails leader Alison Lee of UCLA at 9-under.

Kim made eight birdies and just four bogeys on the day and also holed out from the fairway on the par-4 first in the morning. She is four clear of teammate Charlotte Thomas at 2-under.

The Huskies will go for the win Tuesday as they complete their fall season. "Just more of the same (Tuesday)," said Mulflur. "We can't play defense so we just need to continue to be patient and control what we can control."
