Veterans Toms & Rollins Share Lead at Halfway Point of Sanderson Farms Championship

David Toms and John Rollins each carded 6-under 66s to tie for the lead after 36 holes of the Sanderson Farms Championship. The $4 million PGA Tour event began Thursday at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.

The 47-year-old Toms, a 13-time Tour winner whose last title came in the 2011 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, posted six birdies to reach 10-under 134, the same halfway total as Rollins.

Rollins had eight birdies and two bogeys. It's been awhile since the 39-year-old Virginian - who has three Tour victories - visited the winner's circle. His last title came in the 2009 Reno-Tahoe Open.

The veteran Toms likes his position heading into the weekend. "Just to play well is what excites me," Toms said. "You never know, when you hang around on the leaderboard a little bit, every once in a while you're able to get one."

Two shots back is Canadian Nick Taylor, who posted a 69. The 26-year-old Taylor played his collegiate golf at the University of Washington, where in 2009 he won the Mark H. McCormack Medal for finishing atop the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Tied for fourth at 7-under 137 are two Americans Tom Gillis and Robert Streb, who shot 68 and 70, respectively. Another stroke back are Americans William McGirt, Shawn Stefani, Lucas Glover, Vaughn Taylor and Boo Weekley along with Mexico's Oscar Fraustro and Argentina's Fabian Gomez.

After opening with a stellar 65, first-round leader Sebastian Cappelen was 3-over par but 4-under overall through 16 holes before darkness suspended play. The 24-year-old from Denmark - along with 14 others - will have to finish his second round Saturday morning before starting the third round.

The tentative 36-hole cut is 1-under 143, but that won't be fully established until after the completion of the second round.
