Weekend Tournament Recap

Bubba Rolls in Connecticut

Bubba Watson recorded his eighth career PGA Tour victory Sunday at the Travelers Championship, a tournament where he earned his first title back in 2010. The 36-year-old Floridian and two-time Masters champion birdied the second playoff hole, the par-4 18th at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., to edge England's Paul Casey.

Watson and Casey closed with rounds of 67 and 65, respectively, to end up tied after 72 holes at 16-under 264 on the par-70 course, sending the proceedings into a sudden-death playoff. After each parred the 18th the first time, Watson's birdie on the 20th hole put him two wins away from a longtime goal.

"My whole goal in my career was to get 10 wins," Watson said. "I felt like in this day and age with the talent level all across the world … that 10 is a big number to get. Tiger Woods raised the bar for everybody, and I think that around the world they've raised the bar. So it makes it tougher to win."

Two Champions Tour Majors for Maggert

In the U.S. Senior Open at a roasting Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Jeff Maggert logged the first USGA title of his career after closing with a 5-under 65 to edge defending champion Colin Montgomerie by two strokes. It was the 51-year-old Texan's second major on the Champions Tour after hde won the Regions Tradition in May.

Maggert fired rounds of 70, 65, 70 and 65 to end up at 10-under 270. "It's satisfying just because the guys out here on the Champions Tour are the same guys that I was trying to beat 20 years ago," Maggert said.

As for finally breaking through to win one of America's national golf championships, he added, "I had a lot of good runs in the U.S. Open over the years and probably lacked a little maturity to pull it off. But certainly, now that I'm an old guy, I've learned a lot and was able to just steady myself and play well."

Choi Finishes with a Flourish in Arkansas

After going 1-over through 15 holes on Sunday, South Korea's Na Yeon Choi closed with a bang, posting an eagle two on the par-4 16th and a birdie on the par-3 17th for a closing 69 to win the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. The 54-hole LPGA Tour event took place at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark.

Choi's 15-under 198 was two shots lower than Japan's Mika Miyazato and three better than defending champion and local favorite Stacy Lewis, Spain's Azahara Munoz and Sweden's Anna Nordqvist.

Choi turned her final round around after holing out from 142 yards with an 8-iron on the 16th. "I thought it was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to go in," she said. "I was very happy after that shot, but unfortunately I couldn't see the ball going in. I just heard a lot of screaming around the green."

She used the same 8-iron on next hole to put her ball to a foot on the 17th for the tap-in birdie that secured her ninth LPGA Tour title. "Those two shots, I think I have to remember for my future," said Choi, who earned $300,000.
