Wiebe Sets Pace in Hawaii

Mark Wiebe opened with an 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship. The $1.8 million Champions Tour event began Friday at Kapolei Golf Club.

Wiebe, a four-time winner on the over-50 circuit whose most recent title came in July in the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, carded nine birdies in the first 14 holes and a bogey on the par-4 closing hole.

The 56-year-old Oregon native is two shots ahead of Mark Calcavecchia and John Cook, and three in front of Brian Henninger. Bart Bryant, Brad Faxon and Corey Pavin are tied for fifth after 68s.

Eleven players opened with 69s. The group includes 18-time Champions Tour winner Bernhard Langer, defending champion Willie Wood and Vijay Singh.

Singh, who turned 50 in February, is making his Champions Tour debut. A 34-time winner on the PGA Tour and three-time major winner, the Fijian had four birdies and a bogey Friday.

Charles Schwab Cup points' leader Kenny Perry carded a 72, while 2013 U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples had a 71. Also posting 71 is Mexico's Esteban Toledo, who won the Montreal Championship two weeks ago.
