Wilson Gets Medalist Honors


Fortified with a seven-stroke lead heading into the second round of stroke play, 47-year-old Jeff Wilson cruised in as the medalist of the 2010 U.S. Amateur in University Place, Wash.

After firing a 10-under 62 on the Home Course in nearby Dupont Monday, Wilson carded a 3-over 74 in the second round on the much tougher host venue, Chambers Bay, edging Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Patrick Rodgers from Avon, Ind., by a stroke after finishing 7-under 136.

Cantlay who plans to attend UCLA, shot the best round of the day, a 5-under-par 67 at the Home Course for a 36-hole score of 137; Rodgers shot a 68. (For full scoring, visit http://www.usga.org/ChampEventScore.aspx?id=17179869326&year=2010&type=stroke.)

Andres Echavarria of Colombia carded a 68 at the Home Course and is tied with Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky. (69 at Chambers Bay), at 4-under.

The only other player under par is Eric Chun; after opening with a 1-over 73 at the Home Course, he posted a 69 Tuesday at Chambers Bay.

The cut line was set at 6-over 149. The top 64 players now move on to the match-play portion of the championship, the remainder of which will take place at Chambers Bay.
