Woods to Design New Course in Dubai

Tiger Woods has been tabbed to design a new 18-hole golf course in Dubai. The course will be part of the Akoya Oxygen residential project and, if all goes well, will open in 2017.

The course, to be called Trump World Golf Club in Dubai, will be operated by Trump Golf. In addition to the course, the golf facility will include a clubhouse, restaurant and pro shop.

"I've been fortunate to play great golf courses all over the globe, from the original links courses in Scotland to the famous parkland courses in America and the distinctive layouts of the sandbelt of Australia," Woods said in a statement.

"I hope to bring elements of those great courses and others to the Trump World Golf Club Dubai with the end result being a course that golfers will want to play again and again."

Dubai's Damac Properties is the developer of the project. The course will replace another layout that was planned four years ago but was canceled in the wake of the city's property-market collapse. Also in the works for the two-square-mile property southeast of downtown Dubai are 287 luxury villas and mansions.

The first Woods-designed golf course to open - on December 16 - will be El Cardonal in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Last week the 14-time major winner signed on as the designer of the new Bluejack National, a private club in Montgomery, Texas, just outside of Houston.
