Zurich Classic Suspended Due to Threatening Weather; Swafford & Weekley Share Lead

Hudson Swafford followed up his opening 5-under 67 with a 66 to rise to the top of the leaderboard in the Zurich Classic. The $6.9 million PGA Tour event teed off Thursday at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, near New Orleans.

Because of the threat of severe weather coming through Friday afternoon, the second round was suspended at 4:30 CDT. Play will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, after which the 36-hole cut will be set.

Shortly after officials ordered the players and spectators to leave the Pete Dye-designed course the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Southeast Louisiana. The storm warnings are expected to dissipate over the weekend.

Swafford, a 27-year-old from Florida who attended the University of Georgia, enjoyed a spotless card of six birdies to get to 11-under 133. Weekley, who began the day tied for the lead with Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge after each posted 64s, had three birdies through 15 holes before play was halted.

de Jonge finished with a 2-under 70 and is tied for third at 10-under with Cameron Tringale (65) and three others who weren't able to finish. The latter group included Jerry Kelly (8-under through 17 holes), Daniel Berger (4-under through 14) and Jason Day (5-under through 14). At No. 6 in the world, Day is the highest-ranked player in the field this week.

Tied for eighth at 135 are Chad Campbell (68), Steven Bowditch and Morgan Hoffman (5-under through 15), Justin Thomas (5-under through 12), Chris Stroud (4-under through 11) and David Hearn (2-under through 11).

After opening with a 73, defending champion Seung-Yul Noh withdrew midway through the second round, citing a back injury. The 23-year-old South Korean played eight holes Friday - carding two birdies and a pair of bogeys - before pulling out.
