Bad Weather Cuts Madeira Islands Open in Half

Already reduced to 54 holes because of high winds wiped out the first round Thursday, the Madeira Islands Open got even shorter after heavy rains flooded the greens and caused a lengthy suspension of play Friday in the European event at the Club de Golf do Santo de Serra in Portugal.

At the end of the day, Denmark's Joachim B Hansen was still in first following his only completed round of 4-under 68. Seven players had 69s, and there were two others at 3-under but they haven't been able to polish off an official round.

As a result of all the weather problems, officials have cut the tournament in half, hoping to get all the first-round holes in on Sunday morning before the start of the second - and final - round.
