Bohn Cards 64 to Take Lead in True South Classic


While the Open Championship is underway in England, the PGA Tour remains active in the States at the True South Classic, a $3 million event that started Thursday at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.

Through 18 holes Jason Bohn found himself atop the leaderboard after carding an 8-under 64. The 39-year-old carded three birdies on the front nine and five more on the back to take a one-stroke lead over Luke Guthrie.

Bohn, a two-time Tour winner whose previous victory came in the 2010 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, has been in a bit of funk lately and is hoping that a win - worth $540,000 - this week can propel him to better things.

"It's been very poor, no doubt," said Bohn, who ranks 154th on the 2012 money list with only $279,472 in earnings. "I haven't played very well at all. I've been struggling and working on my golf game and that adds a lot more mental pressure."

He certainly was pleased with his start in Mississippi. "I played really well," he said. "I made a bunch of putts. The conditions were soft. There was no wind and the greens were very receptive. The greens were perfect. They're some of the best we play on Tour. You kind of had to take advantage of it.

"You could see early that guys were shooting some good scores early and you had to keep your foot on the pedal and keep firing at that flagstick."

Sharing third after 66s were J.J. Killeen, Steve Lowery, Ryuji Imada, Jason Gore and Willie Wood. Lowery (2000) and Wood (1996) are previous winners of the tournament.

Not all first rounds of the tournament were completed; play was halted at 2:31 p.m. (ET) as a storm came through the Madison area. Play will resume when the weather improves.
