Calcavecchia Takes Charge at Principal Charity Classic

Mark Calcavecchia followed up his opening 5-under 67 with a 68 to take a one-stroke lead at the Principal Charity Classic. The $1.75 million, 54-hole Champions Tour event is being held at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

Calcavecchia, a 54-year-old Nebraska native who now lives in Florida, posted six birdies and two bogeys to reach 9-under 135, a stroke clear of Joe Durant, who carded his second straight 68, and two in front of Paul Goydos, Brian Henninger and Michael Allen, who all shot 70s.

Three behind Calcavecchia are Americans Bart Bryant, Kirk Triplett and Jeff Maggert - who all shot 67s - and Australia's Peter Senior (68) and Canada's Rod Spittle (70).

After sharing the 18-hole lead following 6-under 66s on Friday, Argentina's Jose Coceres and American Billy Andrade posted rounds of 73 and 76 to fall down the leaderboard.

Defending champion Tom Pernice Jr. had a 74 to drop into a tie for 24th at 3-under 141.
