Canizares Leads Heading into Sunday of BMW PGA Championship
Spain's Alejandro Canizares carded a 4-under 68 to take a one-shot lead heading in Sunday's final round at the BMW PGA Championship. The European Tour major is taking place at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England.
The 30-year-old Madrid native stands at 9-under 207, but right on his tail a stroke back is England's Lee Westwood, who posted a 67 that included an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole, three birdies and a bogey.
Sharing third at 209 are Italy's Matteo Manassero (69) and Scotland's Marc Warren (70). Ireland's Shane Lowry (69) is in solo fifth at 210, while sharing sixth at 211 are 36-hole leader Francesco Molinari (73) and his brother Edoardo (69) of Italy, Spain's Sergio Garcia (68) and Pablo Larrazabal (67), and England's Mark Foster (72), Eddie Pepperell (71), Richard Bland (69) and Lee Slattery (69).
Canizares is hoping he can somehow keep a low profile and secure his second European Tour victory. "I know that people will look at the leaderboard and would assume Lee (Westwood) is going to win. But this sport has proven that it's not always what it looks like," he said. "Anybody within five shots of the lead has an opportunity to win, so you never know."
Westwood has never won the tournament in two decades of playing it; last year he lost to Luke Donald in a playoff. "I've now been coming here 20 years and it would feel great to win," the 40-year-old Brit said. "But then I've always played well around here and I feel the course suits my game."
After rounds of 78 and 72, Donald missed the cut and isn't around this weekend.
