Choi Takes Marathon Classic in Playoff
Chella Choi parred the first sudden-death playoff hole to edge fellow South Korean and win the Marathon Classic. The 72-hole LPGA Tour event took place at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio.
After both players finished regulation tied at 14-under 270, with Choi closing with a 5-under 66 and Jang a 68, Choi's par was good enough to beat Jang, who bogeyed the first extra hole, the par-5 18th.
The victory for Choi, worth $225,000, was her first after toiling seven years on the LPGA Tour. "I can't believe it," said Choi. "This is really good. It's my dream come true.
"I work with my father eight years (seven on the LPGA Tour) and somebody said like, 'Why I don't win, just for my caddie?' So I'm so excited with my father. The first time (to) win is hard, but second and third is easier. Hopefully this (is) turning point for me."
Finishing a shot out of the playoff were New Zealand's Lydia Ko and China's Shanshan Feng, who each posted 67s, while tied for fifth at 273 were South Koreans Hyoo Joo Kim (67) and Q Baek (70) and American Brittany Lang (68).
Spain's Azahara Munoz (65), American Angela Stanford (69) and South Korea's Inbee Park (70) tied for eighth at 274.
