Chun Surprise Winner of U.S. Women's Open
Relative unknown In Gee Chun fired a closing 4-under 66 to win the 70th U.S. Women's Open, held at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Playing in America's national golf championship for the first time, the 20-year-old carded seven birdies and three bogeys to finish at 8-under 272, edging fellow South Korean and 54-hole leader Amy Yang by a stroke.
Yang, who began Sunday with a three-stroke margin over American Stacy Lewis, never got untracked in the final round.
The 25-year-old Yang had two birdies and five bogeys through 15 holes, before carding an eagle on the par-4 16th and a birdie on the par-3 17th to rise into a tie with Chun. But after driving into the rough on the 18th, Yang couldn't get a par to force a playoff, settling for a bogey.
For Chun, the entire week was special. "This is my first U.S. Open in the United States and I just tried to enjoy the moment," she said through a translator after receiving the trophy. "I tried to have fun every moment."
Yet another South Korean, No. 1-ranked Inbee Park, finished with a 67 to end up at 275 with Lewis, who recorded a 70.
Ending up five strokes behind Chun in a tie for fifth were Canadian teenager Brooke Henderson, who matched Chun's 67 for the low round of the day, Sweden's Pernilla Lindberg (67), South Korea's So Yeon Ryu (67), Japan's Shiho Oyama (70), and Americans Jane Park and Morgan Pressel, who each shot 68s.
Defending U.S. Women's Open champion Michelle Wie closed with a 70 to end up in 11th at 278, while erstwhile No. 1 Lydia Ko had a 68 to share 11th at 279 with Taiwan's Min Lee (70).
