Club at Spanish Peaks Open for First Full Season
Golf course designer and former PGA Tour regular Tom Weiskopf is well known for his golf course designs. This summer, his latest creation has opened for its first full season. The Club at Spanish Peaks is the centerpiece of a new private community in Big Sky, Mont.
The private 7,200 yard, par-72 track boasts some of the most scenic views from a golf course anywhere in the U.S. It features a diverse combination of holes that showcases several Weiskopf trademarks, including a risk-reward par-4 - at the 17th hole - that tempts players to drive the green. And the par-3 15th hole offers sweeping vistas of the Spanish Peaks Range, Gallatin Mountain Range and Lone Peak.
"When I first saw the 3,500-acre parcel of land at Spanish Peaks, a very unique opportunity was presented to me. It is rare for a developer to give me the luxury of putting the golf course where it is best suited on the land before any development has taken place," said Weiskopf. "It's not everyday that a golf course takes priority over real estate."
The Club at Spanish Peaks spans a natural landscape covered by blue spruce, aspen and lodge pole pine trees, wetlands and ponds, and a bright array of colorful wildflowers that blossom in summer. Wildlife - bear, elk, deer, moose and coyotes abounds, with birds ranging from bald eagles to hawks, Western meadowlarks and Western bluebirds.
Weiskopf rode the land on horseback as he envisioned the design and routing of the course. He tried to "keep the feel of Montana Big Sky freedom and open space, thus protecting the wildlife habitat and game trails while blending with the homesites and maximizing the homeowners' views." He says the layout is walkable, and provides members with a "dramatic and memorable core golf" experience.
Members also have access to a 32,000-square-foot, Hart Howerton-designed clubhouse that opened in February 2006. Upon entering the building, members are greeted with views of the Spanish Peaks, a grand log staircase, and a fireplace open to both the great room and the bar. The décor is reminiscent of a classic mountain lodge and features giant exposed spruce beams and stonework. The three-story building contains dining rooms, the pro shop, locker facilities, a tournament-staging area, lounge and seven guest suites.
