Curtis Cup Starts Friday in St. Louis


The 2014 Curtis Cup Match begins Friday at St. Louis (Mo.) Country Club. The biennial event, which matches amateur teams from the U.S. and Great Britain and Ireland, began in 1932. The Americans lead the overall series 27-7-3, with GB&I the defending champions.

The eight-player USA squad led by captain Ellen Port, a St. Louis native, includes the following players:

Tegwen Matthews of Wales will return as captain of the GB&I Team, a position she held in 2012 when the GB&I rallied to beat the Yanks at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland by a slim 10½ to 9½ margin.

The Curtis Cup consists of six foursomes (alternate-shot) matches, six four-ball matches and eight singles matches over three days of competition. It will be aired on Golf Channel. First-day coverage will be tape-delayed from midnight-2 a.m. EDT, with the four-ball and foursomes matches (June 7) and singles matches (June 8) airing live from 5-7 p.m. EDT.
