Dawson Gets First Champions Tour Title


Marco Dawson closed with a 3-under 69 to win the inaugural Tucson Conquistadores Classic. The $1.7 million Champions Tour event took place at Omni Tucson National's Catalina course in Arizona.

The 51-year-old Dawson, who began Sunday with a one-stroke lead, carded five birdies and two bogeys to finish at 13-under 203, two strokes ahead of Bart Bryant (70) and three in front of Mark O'Meara (66).

The victory for the German-born, Florida resident was Dawson's first on the over-50 circuit. He earned $255,000.

Tied for fourth at 207 were Tom Pernice Jr. (68) and Wes Short Jr. (72), while sharing sixth at 208 were Scott Hoch (67), Jeff Sluman (67) and Russ Cochran (68).

Reigning Charles Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer posted a 69 to tie for ninth at 209 with Gene Sauers (69), Jeff Maggert (69), Colin Montgomerie (70) and Jerry Smith (73).
